NEW EP, ALBUM, VIDEO AND TOUR!

ARCHIVE are set to return with the epic and beautiful new album With Us Until You’re Dead.

Produced by longtime collaborator Jerome Devoise, the album will be released on the band’s own Dangervisit Records on 27th August 2012.

Part-orchestral, part-electronic, part-soulful, part-progressive and wholly emotion-soaked, the album is a cinematic and restlessly inventive landscape.

Talking about the new album Darius said “We’ve always written songs that focused on social and political issues but for this album I really wanted the songs to be more personal - love songs basically. But coming at the subject matter in that non-formatted Archive way.”

“I grew up a massive Otis Redding fan and I wanted to bring some of that soulfulness to the songs, but at the same time to make them twisted and experimental.”

First taster from the album comes in the form of the ‘Wiped Out / Violently EP‘released on July 2nd. Featuring remixes from the likes of Man Without Country, Sei A and Rosko John, the EP will be released on 12” and download formats.

‘Violently’ (“one of the darkest and most powerful songs we’ve ever done” Darius reckons) features new vocalist Holly Martin and comes with a suitably dark promo video directed by legendary graphic designer Brian Cannon who created album covers for Oasis and The Verve amongst others.

Chopper With a View …

It’s not everyday, well it’s not really, well, EVER that you get told that you will be flying into a gig by Helicopter.

A Short Jaunt to The French Alps to play an hour show and then a midnight DJ Set was on the cards for the words you will read for this blog.

We rehearsed for a couple days in London then on Tuesday I made my way to the airport after a quick few sunrise BP snaps and a full English.

A tiny little shrivelled brained anger man decided to shout at Pollard and I for apparently walking down the plane the wrong way!! Not a nice way to start our journey when being cramped into a machine that travels thousand of feet in the sky. I wished the peanut cock a broken leg but then just thought what a sad and angry man he must be. I read a little and then slept.

Travelled to the Hotel high above the sea, ate some cheese, ate a frog leg, drank some white wine then went to bed.

Woke up slightly nervous at knowing I would be taking a Helicopter into the Alps to play the show.. People are scared of Helicopter travel, I can understand why but had decided from the start that I would be one of the members that would say YES !! Along with Darius and Steve we made our way to the chopper pad.

No time to think about it so got in, belted up and awaited lift off.. It was a bit like being in an old car, like a mini metro or something like that but flies.. It was a buzz feeling this small machine lift from the concrete and roar up into the sky. The views were absolutely stunning and we made it safely to the piste.

The gig was a bit strange as it was full of skiers and snowboarders obviously and I don’t think I will ever play a show with that many pairs of sunglasses looking back at me again. The crowd enjoyed it and no snowballs were thrown.

After the show we then jumped on some Skidoos and were taken to a restaurant to eat and avoid snow blindness, bit odd being on the back of a skidoo waving at fans and giving a few peace signs. Mountain Macca would be proud..

Had some nice nosh and Wine then jumped back on the skidoo back up the mountain to await the chopper back down to earth with Kev (Front of house) and John (Monitors) added to the melancholic chopper party. The Helicopter went higher this time and it was a bit more twitchy than the way up but was still a total buzz. We landed safely on the big H and came back to the hotel where I’m writing this right now as I type.

No ideas what the DJ set will be like? The bar is called Sloppys for Choppers sake..  I’m gonna turn the bass up nice and fat, drink a beer and enjoy the night.

What a wonderful ridiculous world I sometimes live in.

Bass to the almighty yeah

I am Dave Pen x

Mastered …

After many weeks of not being aware that Winter had slowly crept into Spring, our genius Jerome surfaced into daylight from behind the huge mixing desk in North-East Paris with the finished Archive album clutched firmly in his froggy fingers.

Next in this process was yet another Eurostar journey over to London to meet up with Kevin Metcalfe at Soundmasters for the album mastering. The familiar faces of Smiley, Noycey and Pollard dropped in to give support and listen to the months of hard work being finally committed to half inch tape (those of you who are audiophiles know that this gives a warmer/richer sound). And there it is … finished, gleaming and waiting to be unleashed upon the ears of us all.

Not quite the end of the journey as we now move on to artwork and promotion but, like all proud Mothers and Fathers of a newly delivered, we wanted to share our good news with you …

A little wintry update …

It is cold … ‘brass monkeys’ as we say back over the channel in blighty ! I’m not sure what the French expression for ‘brass monkeys’ is but I’m sure it is lovely… (I’ve just been informed that it is ‘Il fait un froid de canard’ ). Anyway, mon dieu, c’est trop froid !! And maybe the only person who has not really noticed is Jerome, locked away in the dark studio in Paris, using his finely tuned ears to bring together the Archive sound … bless him.

Danny has been laying down the final few samples and Jerome is adding reverb to these strange noises, interludes are appearing, finely weaving these songs together to create the ‘melange’ that is ‘A’ ! In other words, things are coming together. Darius is still wondering what to eat tonight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow lunch, tomorrow evening etc … ( you get the idea ). Tonight he is cooking a steamy chicken broth for Pollard, Winter fodder to warm the cockles of his heart ! And we are all in good spirits despite the cold, the emanating sounds are our own personal hot-water bottles (bouillottes). Stay safe and warm and have a ‘Grog’ for us …

And now, the end is near …

… well, not quite yet, but a bit closer.

The last few days had seen us relocate to the wonderful ICP Studios in Brussels where we were joined by the fabulous Belgian orchestra. You may have heard us playing with these guys at Rock En Seine, so you have an idea of how incredible they sound. Under then capable hands of our arranger /  conductor Simon Lole they have added textured layers to the new songs… an aural duvet if you like. The session flowed smoothly and Jerome remained calm and professional throughout, even when asked for the hundredth time by Darius what his favourite food was and what he was going to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the coming week.

We then were able to celebrate with a DJ set at the Potemkin Bar. Thanks to all who came down to see us. Binky, Danny and Dave lead the way with their audio adventure. Was the perfect way to raise a glass to the end of the recording session and a good opportunity for Danny to become better acquainted with the streets of Brussels on one of his exploration journeys. Many thanks go out to our hosts for that evening.

And finally we headed up to Antwerp for our own evening of discovery. Ably assisted by our guide Alan from Deus we took in the sights and smells of the city and also sampled a few Belgian beers. Pollard and Alan made a formidable team at table football and still remain unbeaten. Steep stairs and wobbly chairs were all taken in our stride and even the wrong train via Amsterdam could not stop us from finally getting home in one piece with tales to tell.

Next ? Back into the studio for a long mixing session. Jerome will be working his magic and steering the good ship Archive back into port … that all sounds very romantic !

Tweaking …

So here we are, back in London for one last day ‘tweaking’ a few things before the final push with the orchestra next week. ‘Tweaking’ involves eating chocolate biscuits, drinking tea and scrutinising the extra special sounds blips. Danny has supplied so many strange, bizarre, amusing, chaotic, funny, scary and generally fucked up noises that add the spice to the Archive platter.

Also a few vocal takes have been added and now the drives are whirring as the day’s work is being backed up, finished again. So now time to kick back, relax and wait for the local curry house delivery guy to arrive with:

1 x Saag Paneer

1 x Tarka Daal

1 x Chicken Korma

1x Chicken Biryani

1 x Plain Rice

1 x Saag Aloo

2 x Plain Naan

1 x Peshwari Naan

1 x Cucumber Raita

1 x Lime Pickle

… who says we’re not rock ‘n roll !?

More to report next week, until then ( as we say in Peckham ) … Bon appetit !
